Smiths take on St Mary’s Old Boys at Twickenham on Saturday Smiths take on St Mary’s Old Boys at Twickenham on Saturday

“Very rarely do you get a second chance and we’ve got one.”

That’s the rallying cry from Smiths head coach Ben Parker as he looks ahead to Saturday’s RFU Community Cup  Counties 2 Championship final against St Mary’s Old Boys  at Twickenham (1pm).

Smiths were beaten in the final of the competition last season by Old Elthamians and while getting to a final at the home of English rugby is an achievement in itself, Parker wants more.

“This time we want to win,” he said. “We’ve got the chance to do something very special.

“We wanted to win last year, of course, but this is huge for the club. We’re filling up the history book, getting to finals, winning finals.

“We’re building up our legacy, this is incredibly special for the club.”

And although they were beaten 31-19 by Old Elthamians, they know how to win an a RFU Community trophy because they were crowned Counties 2 South Plate champions two years ago when they beat Harrow 31-29 at Dings Crusaders

Beating St Mary’s Old Boys will be very tough, however, and it is something that Smiths have yet to do this season.

They lost both their Counties 2 Gloucestershire games – 43-14 on the opening day of the campaign and then 62-45 at the Prince of Wales Stadium in the final league game of the season at the end of last month.

“It’s probably fair to say that they’ve humiliated us twice,” admitted Parker. “They put 60 points on us at home, no-one’s done that for a very long time.

“It’s a massive, massive challenge, but it’s a challenge we understand. They are a big team, very strong, but we understand what we need to. We’ve got to compete with them physically.”

St Mary’s Old Boys finished seven points and two places above fourth-placed Smiths in the 12-team Counties 2 Gloucestershire but Parker was very encouraged by his side’s showing in their 53-12 semi-final win at home to Mansfield 10 days ago.

“We’ve had an average season by our standards but we’ve got the chance to right a couple of wrongs,” he said
